Our Services MASTERING

Mastering - Step 3 of the Music Production Process. This page is to explain the mastering procedure.

Mastering differs from mixing as it is work done to the entire song, all 'pieces' combined into one track - the master. What mastering does is it takes things to the next level. For example, a song may have a real good mix but sounds like its playing at '5' when the volume is cranked to '10' ! Mastering gives songs the "radio quality".

What we do during the mastering process is set levels and run the master track through a multi-band compressor. This 'tightens up' sound, allowing for a much greater volume. Then, to restore dynamics compressed by the compressor, we use separate sub-master tracks of mixed tracks (for example: Lead vocals, Backing vocals, Drums, etc.) and 'inject' them uncompressed back into the master track creating a new Final Master Track. We then run the Final Master Track through an equalizer to give the song its final shine.

The song is now finished but the Mastering process could continue. For example, if an album is being produced, the Master levels of each song could be checked against each other and, if necessary, adjusted. This would ensure each song has the same volume and no song would be louder than others (unless wanted that way by Artist...).

This last procedure described above is generally what we do when transferring vinyl (or cassette) analog recordings to digital - Remastering - this is another service we offer. Other services we offer are Video Production, Distribution (through RebHellion Records) and Rehearsal space.
